If your client is a UK trustee holding a Standard Life International Bond, they need to make sure their trust is registered with Ireland’s Central Register of Beneficial Ownership of Trusts (CRBOT).

This is because our International Bond is provided by Standard Life International dac based in Dublin, Ireland. UK trustees must also register on the UK Trust Registration Service.

What is the CRBOT?

The CRBOT is a register designed to help prevent money laundering and terrorist financing by delivering greater clarity on who ultimately owns and controls trusts with links to Ireland.

The CRBOT will hold details of relevant trusts and their beneficial owners. Trustees are responsible for the registration and will need to make sure all the necessary information is submitted to the Revenue Commissioners, who will manage the CRBOT.

How to register a trust with CRBOT?

A trustee or financial adviser, on behalf of the trustee, can register a new or existing trust directly with the Revenue Commissioners. They’ve created a helpful step-by-step guide which you can refer to for help when completing the registration process.

A professional trustee service can also be used to complete the CRBOT registration. ZEDRA, an independent international trust provider, can help to complete the CRBOT registration either as a standalone service or as part of their professional trustee service. You can find more information on this in the ‘Common questions answered’ section below.

If you have any questions or need further support, you can contact the Revenue Commissioners at NonResCRBOT@revenue.ie

When do trusts need to be registered by?

All new trusts must register within 6 months of being set up.
In the case of existing trusts, these should be registered with the CRBOT as soon as practically possible.

For new trusts and existing trusts, Standard Life International will need to carry out Discrepancy checks on the CRBOT at key trigger events. This is to make sure the details we hold match those on the CRBOT. You don’t need to send us anything now, but we will require access to CRBOT to carry out the checks to meet our own obligations as a designated person. You can grant us access via the discrepancy form on the Revenue’s website. We require access in advance of a key trigger event to avoid any potential delays.

The key trigger events, which we can’t complete without first checking against the CRBOT, are as follows:

  • surrender request (full or partial)
  • assignment out of trust
  • assignment in to trust
  • when a new increment or new recurrent single payment is made to an existing trust
  • update of beneficial owners
