Juggling work and military commitments

Simon: Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to become a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer?

Kirsty: I joined the RAF Air Cadets at the age of 13, initially I went along to support a friend but I ended up really enjoying the activities and staying to the age of 18. I came back as staff in 2010 with the intention of giving something back. We parade twice a week and whilst there’s a minimum of 12 hours per month for uniformed CFAV’s I can easily spend over 10 hours of my week doing cadet related things.

Simon: What inspired you to join Standard Life, and how does your role here align with your values and interests?

Kirsty: I was excited to join because of its strong commitment to community service and leadership development, which align with my values as a cadet forces adult volunteer. My role here allows me to mentor future leaders and contribute to meaningful projects, reflecting my passion for service, teamwork, and continuous personal growth.

Simon: How do you balance your responsibilities at work with your role as a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer?

Kirsty: It's important for me to compartmentalise my activities, manage my time effectively, and identify priorities. By utilising the Special Leave policy, I can take leave to support my volunteer role without compromising my effectiveness in either my work or volunteer responsibilities.

Simon: Have there been any particularly challenging moments, and how did you manage them?

Kirsty: Balancing my work and volunteer responsibilities can be challenging at times, especially when urgent deadlines arise. I am so fortunate to have support from amazing people from my team at the squadron to my team at work!  

 

Simon: What kind of support have you received from Standard Life to help you fulfil your duties as a volunteer?

Kirsty: Standard Life has been incredibly supportive in helping me fulfil my duties as a volunteer. The Special Leave policy has been particularly beneficial, allowing me to take time off for my volunteer activities without impacting my work responsibilities. Additionally, the company promotes a flexible work environment, which helps me manage my time effectively between my professional and volunteer roles. The encouragement and understanding from my colleagues and management have also been invaluable, ensuring I can commit to both my work and volunteer duties successfully.

Simon: How has your experience as a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer influenced your professional development?

Kirsty: My experience as a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer has significantly influenced my professional development. It has honed my leadership skills, teaching me how to motivate and guide others effectively. The role has also enhanced my time management and organisational abilities, as balancing multiple responsibilities requires careful planning and prioritisation. These skills have translated directly into my professional life, making me a more effective and adaptable team member at work.

Simon: How has Standard Life benefited from your training and experience with the Cadet Force Adult Volunteers?

Kirsty: The leadership skills I've developed enable me to effectively manage and motivate people, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. My enhanced time management and organisational abilities ensure that projects are completed efficiently, and deadlines are met. I've also benefited from leadership and instructor courses, which have further refined my ability to train and mentor colleagues which contribute to a more dynamic and adaptable workforce.

Simon: What are your hopes for the future in terms of your career and your continued service with the Cadet Forces?

Kirsty: In terms of my career, I hope to continue growing within Standard Life, taking on more leadership roles and contributing to meaningful projects that align with my values. I aim to leverage the skills and experiences I've gained as a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer to drive positive change and innovation within the company.

For my continued service with the Cadet Forces, I hope to continue mentoring the next generation of cadets and helping them achieve their full potential. Ultimately, I want to continue serving my community while advancing my career, finding fulfilment in both roles.
