We’re a pioneering UK think tank with a bold ambition to help everyone achieve long-term financial security.

Our history

We began life in 2021 as Phoenix Insights – a think tank founded by Phoenix Group. Now in 2025 we’ve rebranded as the Standard Life Centre for the Future of Retirement.

Since we began, we’ve been working hard to drive change in how we approach work, pensions and retirement in the UK.  We have:

  • Built a body of high-quality research to understand the issues people face
  • Advocated for policy to tackle economic inactivity and inadequate pension saving
  • Campaigned to raise awareness of the need to think and act differently about working and saving over longer lives.

Our focus

Our work focuses on issues related to pensions, work and retirement. In particular, we work to drive the changes needed so that people are:

  • Included in sufficient and affordable pension saving
  • Supported to make good decisions about their pension saving and retirement income choices
  • Working in good quality, flexible jobs that suit their lives, and able to actively manage their careers
  • Protected from poverty with state support through an adequate and sustainable State Pension and benefits system

What we do

  • Analysis: We conduct and commission high-quality research and analysis to providing valuable new insights into how people are thinking, feeling and acting about pensions, work and retirement, and make the case for change.
  • Advocacy: We advocate for solutions from government, the pensions industry and employers.
  • Action: We use partnerships to collaborate on campaigns, support action and to test solutions that others can take further. Convening and working with others who share our mission maximises our collective impact.
  • Awareness: We raise public awareness of the need to think differently about pensions, work and retirement, and inspire people to take action for themselves.
