Find out what they are, how they work and how you can invest in them.

Make it easy to save for retirement

Our strategic lifestyle profiles are set up to make sure that by the time you reach retirement, your money is in the right type of investments for how you plan to take your pension savings – whether that’s:

  • Buying an guaranteed income (annuity)
  • Taking it all as a lump sum
  • Keeping it invested and taking it out as and when you want
  • Or a combination of these options

They’re easy because once you’re in a strategic lifestyle profile, you don’t need to do anything. We’ll do everything for you right up until you retire, although we always recommend that you regularly review your investments to make sure they remain on track for your plans.

You can also be confident that if you choose a strategic lifestyle profile now, even if you’re not retiring for 20, 30 or even 40 years, it will remain up to date. If there are changes in legislation, or something happens in the markets that affects our strategic lifestyle profiles, we’ll make changes so they continue to meet your needs.

How they work - two main stages

1. Growth stage – usually when you’re more than 10 years from retirement.

Your money will be invested in funds that aim to increase the value of your pension over time.

2. Approaching retirement stage – usually when you’re less than 10 years from retirement

Your money will be gradually moved into funds designed to get your investments ready for how you plan to take your pension savings – whether that’s guaranteed income (annuity), taking all your money as a lump sum, keeping it invested and taking it out as and when you want or a combination.

This all happens automatically – you don’t need to do anything.

Here’s an example of how the funds you’ll be invested in will change as you get closer to retirement:

Lifestyling glide path

Remember that all funds can go down as well as up in value and your investment could be worth less than what was paid in.
